Kinja'd!!!

Gathered here are the Oppositelock posts that people put a good deal of effort into writing last Tuesday and Wednesday. It includes welder buying advice, self-produced auto reviews, a trip through Burkina Faso and more.

Kinja'd!!!

I want to get a hobby/garage welder. I have a (220 or 110) plug at my disposal and the most I'll ever weld is (1/4 or 3/8). Mostly (steel or aluminum). Price is/isn't an issue too... what would you recommend? I have only ever done (a little mig, a little tig, none of the above). I'm looking at in terms of (dependable/flexible) equipment? I often get a question like sent my way…

That's it. I'm finished reading articles griping about giving automotive recommendations to non-gearhead friends. You know them. They have the tag "RANTS" and then the writer promptly complains about the action of giving car advice. I've read them twice in one week on Jalopnik (and don't get me started on Oppositelock). And I'm fed up with them.

I really enjoy watching automotive and racing videos on YouTube and Vimeo. As each day goes by they get better and better. Channels like Petrolicious, /Drive, ElectricFederal, The Aficionado, Jay Leno, and the list goes on. The quality is near cinematic in some cases. Matt Farah and the crew did a video showing what it takes to capture these pieces and it is not a trivial matter.

I honestly don't understand why every single new car has to be leaked before it is revealed. How much money does it take to bribe pictures out of somebody? Do car companies plan it out and do it on purpose? (I'm sure a few do, but not all) It's a big risk- if you get caught, you will likely lose your job and have a hard time getting another one.

The end of the month is nigh, thus, we must have our west african adventure, for this month, the month of October. If you haven't been following along, I have been putting my travel logs from 2007-2008 up, when I lived in west africa. This time, we went on the longest roadtrip to date; Burkina Faso.

What do you get when you stuff a blown 427 ford based dart engine into a fox body mustang? A car that runs 8 second quarter mile times on 17" wheels! … I happen to be a part of many car forums around the internet, so I get to read about a lot of build threads that people start to show the progress of what they are currently working on. Every once in a while, you come across that car that is just so out in left field, and so extremely out of the ordinary, you have to ask "is that guy out of his mind?"

Mercedes launched the SLS in 2010, and it’s not a common sight. There may be two reasons for this. Firstly, it’s not a cheap car. With prices approaching the £200,000 mark with options, it’s pitched at a market that tends to favour the outrageous. Take a drive through Central London on a Saturday night and the streets seem to be awash with recent Ferrari and Lamborghini models. Within this, is the second reason for the car not being a regular spot; it’s really rather discreet, despite the gullwing doors and race-bred engine.

As some of you may remember, this past weekend was my 10th wedding anniversary. The wife and I took a trip to BEAUTIFUL Door County Wisconsin, in the height of the Autumn color change. It was a bit chilly, and windy, but still sunny and pretty and all those things that made for a good time. Plus the hotel room had a whirlpool tub, HEY-O!

This 1969 BMW 2002 widebody freakshow was a smurf blue feature on Jalopnik in February, reappeared on ebay with poop/vomit paint scheme in June and is now being sold by CNBC's Car Chasers in a magnificent BMW Motorsport livery.

Ah, MotorWeek. Perhaps most (in?)famous for its crazy take on the importance of econobox smooth shift throws and, to borrow a phrase from Jack Baruth, a review style that can be fairly described as summing up to "everybody's a winner." Seriously, have you ever seen a negative review fromMotorWeek? They even gave the Yugo a glowing review. But it looks like even John Davis can be rubbed the wrong way.

Look, I am not too cynical to think that Chinese cars will always be piles of scrap death traps. They will get there within a decade or so. But right now? They are still a joke to me. Take this "Qin" their hybrid, 300+ horsepower turbodiesel saloon. It's probably their current top-of-the-line model or at least, one of their fastest. You're probably thinking "Chrome paint's a bit gaudy, but overall, not bad." and I would be there with you had I not seen the following video.

Why the hell is October 29 and 30 going up on November 7?

I think he's fallen behind and is working on getting caught up. I'm sure this takes a lot of time. Kudos to DasWauto for putting this together.

Was thinking the editors forgot.

Honestly... don't get caught up. if he misses a day or two he misses a day or two.

I admire his fortitude and perseverance. If I were doing something like this, I'd be afraid to let days slip by because I'd finally say "Screw it" and quit altogether.

if you miss a day I don't see the point in catching up. The discussions have gone stale. I would prefer if he misses a day or two that he simply does them when he has time.

I am indeed behind, as you can see though this was posted Tuesday and the editors haven't gotten around to it until today. So a bit of both.

It's a fair point you make about the discussions having gone stale but there are still several posts that I would feature each day that deserve to be seen. That's why I'm still catching up.

I'll post another two day edition later this afternoon/evening. And hopefully I'll be able to schedule two posts for tomorrow.
